Of Love and Eggs

From Beginning to End (A Summary):

This film was directed by Garin Nugroho and released in November 2008. This film is an Indonesian film that is set in a market in Jakarta.

The film revolves in a market focusing on the family of three little children, Bimo, Asih, and Rindu, and of course pulling out the culture, religion and tradition of these kids.

With Bimo's side of the story, he helps his older brother sell eggs. Bimo is reallly troublesome, but that's only because he wants attention - especially attention from a motherly figure. From being like this, Bimo meets a young city girl and favors her as his mother figure, therefore going to her and helping her with housework. But then one day she brought a man into her house and Bimo starts to tell the man to go away and started to call the girl "Mom", frustrated she told Bimo to go home. Bimo got home and became really sad that he locked himself inside the house not letting any of his family and friends come in. Therefore Bimo's older brother brings the girl to calm him down and she did. With this Bimo's brother and the girl became closer together.

Then from Asih's side of the familly, she's left alone with her father, since her mother ran away. Asih's a strong little girl and wants no one to be in her mother's place. But her father wants her to sort of forget her mother and move on, therefore he throws away her mother's rug. but that didn't get in her way of stealing it back.  Asih's father [almost] found himself a widow with an adopted daughter, who he found some commons with her. In the end her mother came back.

As for Rindu, she in a way is retarded - basically can't really talk so well but she understands. She's an adopted daughter only, living with her mom. Ever since she was little she knows that her own older brother will one day come back for her, thus sending lots of mail on a dove to her brother (somewhere). Rindu encounters the fact that her mom wants to move into Asih's father's place and live as a family. In the end Rindu's brother indeed did come back to her bringing in the dome to their cathedral.

Family Bond:

Within this film we can see that family is a big thing in the Indonesian culture. From this film, for example, mother figure is what the kids wants the most. Not only that be the sense of having siblings there for you when you know that you have no one else.
